You can probably even list the attributes, qualities and qualifications that your future husband needs in order to apply for the job of your mate. I had a three-tiered system myself. First, there were the requirements: an interesting profession (preferably in the arts), a great sense of humor, a sterling character, financial security. Next, there was the frosting (as in, wouldnt-it-be-nice-if-he-were): over six feet tall, devastatingly handsome, a cat lover. And finally, there were the deal breakers: children, difficult ex-wives, bad toupees. Of course, like you, I fancied myself to be magnanimous and flexible in as much as I was willing to overlook certain undesirable traits say, thinning hair and a few extra pounds for the perfect guy. Now, even if your list is different from mine, I think you know what Im talking about. Heres some advice: Lose your lists now, Ladies! Mine almost kept me from getting to know my husband. Tim and I were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. We were both divorced and practiced daters, and knew the rules of the game. We met at a conveniently located wine bar and immediately set into the first date volley of get-to-know-you-questions: Where are you from? What do you do? How many siblings? My first impression of Tim was that he was utterly unobjectionable: nice, attractive, smartly dressed, well mannered. But something was missing . . . . Lets revisit my list. First off, Tims “interesting profession” was in finance, which to a writer like me seemed like a big snoozer of a job. Next, he was a listener, so at first glance, it didnt appear that he had a “great sense of humor.” As for the other two requirements a “sterling character” and “financial security” both are tough to determine on a first date. What he did have in spades were deal breakers two sons (teenagers, no less) and a horrific ex-wife. My thought bubble at the time? Check, please. What to do next was a no-brainer: I finished my glass of Shiraz, graciously declined his dinner invitation, gave him a peck on the cheek and thought, Nice knowing you, Buddy. I went home, curled up with a book and didnt give Tim or our date a second thought. Luckily for me, my husband didnt subscribe to the list mentality himself. He called. He pursued. He courted. I joked about him to my friends Who was this suit and why wouldnt he just leave me alone? But Tim was sincere in his feelings and steadfast in his determination. He wouldnt take no for an answer. Since I refused to make time for proper dates for weeks, he tagged along to some readings and other literary events. Reluctantly, over the course of several months, I got to know him. Turns out, Tim is unquestionably the man of my dreams, though he bears little resemblance to the fantasy man I thought Id end up with. Tim is funny and smart and warm beyond words and, though finance still isnt fascinating to me, it is to him, which is all that matters in the end. He has given me a daughter and made my life happy in ways I would never have imagined. And to think, if left to my own devices and my own list I probably wouldnt even remember his name right now. Here are a few things to remember. Lists only rule people out, which isnt a good way of allowing someone new and wonderful into your life (presumably your goal). If the guy youre with is not as tall or as rich or as skilled in witty bantering as you thought Mr. Right should be, take the time to notice what his strengths are. Its always easier to see whats wrong than whats right, and far more rewarding to do the opposite. Remember, its hard to find love if youre busy thinning the herd. Besides, are you really willing to gamble potential happiness away because he doesnt earn seven figures? Get to know the person across the table from you and above all, be open! These two solutions consist of imposing a sanction such as prison, or tackling the problem from a different angle by offering probation to an offender coupled with drug treatment programs. This article will assess to the effectiveness of the two systems. Firstly, the drug crisis and its effects on society will be examined. Following from this will be an assessment of each of the systems, focusing upon there effectiveness. Finally, some alternatives will be advocated that depart from the present system. After assessing all of the evidence available, the conclusion that will be reached is that if society is to curtail the exponential rise in drug abuse, a far more informative system must be implemented, before another generation is lost to drug abuse. The Drug Conundrum Drugs have been around in some form or another since 4000BC (Egyptians with wine and marijuana used for medicinal purposes in China). Although drugs were widely used, it was not until the 19th century that the active substances in drugs were extracted and used as a lifestyle choice. The addictive nature of drugs was immediately apparent, although there was a gradual recognition of this property with the passing of the first national drug law, the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. The destructive nature of alcohol in society led to the prohibition period in America. Therefore, the drug problem has been around, and more importantly, been acknowledged for some time. The experimentation period of the 1960s had a profound effect on society. The ethos was love, drugs, social ideological rebellion, more drugs, and then more drugs. The administration was rocked to its very foundations, which culminated in far more draconian police force. Whether proliferation in state interference was inevitable, a position advocated by Orwell, or whether it was a result of drug taking, one can only surmise. Nevertheless, the position is conclusive, drugs have had a significant effect on society. How society has chosen to deal with this crisis will now be examined. The Threat of Prison as a Deterrent for drug Use For an addict, the threat of prison is about as effective as a chocolate teapot in the desert. It relies on the premise that the addiction is controllable. Anybody who smokes or drinks coffee on a regular basis should be in a position to bear testament that the addictive nature of these two substances, once removed, can have severe effects on their day to day lives. So, what about heroin or crack cocaine? Heroin addiction and crack cocaine addiction are possibly two of the most severe drugs for creating dependency and also tolerance. As higher doses are used, over time, physical dependence and addiction develop. With physical dependence, the body has become used to the presence of the drug and withdrawal symptoms may occur if use is reduced or stopped. The interpretation given in a dictionary is the act of suspending the sentence of a person convicted of a criminal offence and granting that person provisional freedom on the promise of good behaviour. This provisional period can entail many things for a convicted drug user, with impositions such as involuntary drug programmes and drug testing. Involuntary drug programmes can entail taking substitute drugs to wean a person off a specific drug, resulting in a lower dependency and a reduced level of tolerance. The problems that can emanate form these programs consist of a lack of secondary support for drug users. This can result in an individual being drawn back into a cyclic situation which ultimately results in that individual taking the very drugs that the substitute drug was supposed replace. Involuntary drug tests emanated from America and involve a person being requested to take a drug test within a specific period of time. If the person tests positive, then the suspended sentence is then imposed, these will often lead to a custodial sentence. Whilst the two systems do have their own merits, it is possible to adduce from these two alternatives a far from satisfactory conclusion. Both systems rely heavily on the circumstances that the drug user finds themselves in once the probation period has been imposed. Those who have funded their habit through criminal activities will often have a criminal record, and thus will be unable to find employment. They will often still exist in the very same peer groups where the original problems emanated, therefore, there must be a more viable solution to this drug quandary. A Possible Alternative The buzz word at this present moment in time is decriminalisation. Decriminalisation, in its most severe form would involve a complete removal of all criminal sanctions that are currently imposed for drug use. This would then remove drug users from the criminal process and would focus attention on treatment. There is staunch opposition to this concept in some quarters as people believe that it would create an environment for experimentation and lead to an exponential rise in drug taking. Advocates for decriminalisation point to alcohol as an example of a drug that, under correct supervision, can be controlled. Conclusion Any problem that involves an addiction will never be able to be tackled by easy solutions. This article has, however, highlighted to difficulties that society faces if it wishes to address this problem in organised concerted fashion. There is, however, a realisation that the draconian legislative measures, that have been, as of today, highly ineffective, being replaced with more suitable measures of tackling the drug issue. By Kathy Thompson It was the happiest day of my life! I was running down the concourse of the airport to catch my plane to a new life - in the Air Force. I felt free and alive for the first time in my life. At first the Air Force didn’t want me, because I was overweight! But I did it! I lost the weight! I went from 165 pounds to 125 pounds. I made it! I felt fantastic! A whole new wardrobe of sizes 10’s and 11’s were waiting for me. I lost 40 pounds in six weeks eating–only protein and drinking lots of water. I drank a lot of water and took multi-vitamin pills. I kept busy looking for a job, playing golf, swimming, and drawing. In the mornings I did 15 sit-ups and 50 running in place. There was one consolation about not eating, no food bills. MacDonald’s was next door. Smelling those Big Mac’s drove me crazy. I was feeling much better about myself and saw the difference. My clothes were getting baggy and lose. The high protein diet was made for me, because I loved meat, eggs, cheese, and fish. Two scrambled eggs (no butter), with tea made a good breakfast. I mixed tuna and shrimp. Some chicken, cheese, a hard boiled egg was another meal. A piece of cheese melted between two thin broiled hamburger patties was a favorite of mine. I had some cottage cheese with it. A take home box of chicken would last for three meals. I took the skin off. Plus I drank 8-10 glasses of water a day. Then I had to wait six months before going active duty. During that summer I had a great time; biking, hiking, swimming, golfing. I ate fresh fruits, vegetables, and watched what I ate. I was full of energy. I lost some more weight. And during basic training, I lost even more weight. All that marching and running around, then eating military food! I was 115 pounds!
